Antony Gormley - Sculptor
Sir Antony Gormley b. 1950, describes his work as
"an attempt to materialise the place at the other side of appearance where we all live."
In 2007 we visited Crosby Beach just north of Liverpool and saw Gormleys installation Another Place.
The work consists of 100 cast iron figures of the artist's own body facing out to sea, spread over a 3.2 km stretch of the beach. Each figure is 189 cm tall and weighs around 650 kg. As the tides ebb and flow,
the figures are revealed and submerged by the sea.
Also in 2007 we saw Gormley's sculpture The Angel of the North in Gateshead, overlooking the Tyne near Newcastle. It is a steel sculpture of an angel,
20 metres tall, with wings measuring 54 metres across. The wings do not stand straight sideways, but are angled 3.5 degrees forward; Gormley did this to create "a sense of embrace".
Among others can be mentioned the Horizon sculpture installation projects: Time Horizon (Cantanzaro, Italy), Event Horizon (London 2007, New York City 2010, São Paulo 2012 and HongKong 2015-16),
Horizon Field (Austrian Alps 2010-12 and Hamburg 2012).

To me it is a modern version of "Christ the Redeemer" on Corcovado overlooking Rio de Janeiro. |
