Chico Buarque
is my favourite Brazilian singer, guitarist and composer.
He was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1944 and became involved at the end of the 1950s with the "Bossa Nova" movement,
spearheaded by Tom Jobim and Vinícius de Moraes.
He became known as an outspoken opponent of the military
dictatorship. He had to serve a short prison sentence for his song
Roda Viva (1968)
and lived in exile in Italy in the early 1970s. In 1974 all his songs were banned in Brazil.
