Vinícius de Moraes - Brazilian Lyricist
Vinícius de Moraes (1913-1980), "O Poetinha", Brazilian lyricist. He studied law and combined his early
career as a bureaucrat with being a bohemian, writer and poet. He eventually became a diplomat, until he was ousted by the miltary regime in 1969.
In 1956 his play Orfeu da Conceição was staged as a musical play. The music was commissioned to young Tom Jobim to write.
The play was adapted to the movie Black Orpheus in 1959. The popular songs by Jobim-Vinícius became known world wide as Bossa Nova.
